What is fluoroscopy?
Where standard X-rays provide still pictures, fluoroscopy is used to provide pictures that are projected on a TV screen. A contrast medium is given and the radiologist is able to observe the images in real time as they are projected on the screen. After the real time study, the radiologist will also take traditional x-rays that will offer greater detail to assist in making a diagnosis. Fluoroscopic procedures include barium swallow, upper GI series, small bowel series, barium enema, gallbladder series, arthrograms and hysterosalpingograms.
How do I prepare for a fluoroscopic examination?
Upper GI or Small Bowel Series
Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the examination.
Barium Enema
Obtain a preparation kit from us 48 hours prior to your appointment. Specific instructions are contained in the preparation kit.
IVP
Purchase a bottle of Citrate of Magnesia from your pharmacy. Drink the Citrate of Magnesia between 3:30-4:00pm the day before your procedure and eat a light dinner that evening. You should have nothing else to eat or drink after midnight the night before the examination.
